At the most recent meeting of the Coal Valley Village Board, members considered a proposal that would have raised the village’s property tax levy by approximately 4% for the upcoming fiscal year.
No residents attended the meeting or offered public comment on the item.
During the board discussion, members reviewed the expected financial impact of the proposed increase, including its effects on village operations and local property owners. I was concerned about the timing of the proposal, noting that families were already experiencing increases in many everyday expenses. I did not believe residents should face an additional tax increase under current economic conditions.
The measure went to a vote; I voted no, and a majority of the board voted against the proposal. As a result, the 4% property tax increase did not pass.
The village will continue operating under the existing levy and budget framework. Additional financial updates will be discussed at future meetings as new revenue and expenditure information becomes available.
